You can’t do it alone! Your crew can help you build a nursery, water plants, carry tools and resources over rugged terrain, clear a patch of invasive brambles, and more.
Ecology
Living things change the environment around them. Trees cast shade that keeps the ground cool and moist. Grasses and wildflowers help break up hard, dry soil. Fast-spreading invasive species crowd out native plants. Think carefully about how the species you are working with affect each other to help the forest thrive.
Fire
Fire is a natural and necessary part of California’s forest ecology. Use fire to clear brush and create nutrient-rich ashes. Encourage healthy fire by clearing ladder fuels and invasive species, and by limbing up trees.
The Sierra Nevada Foothills
Cinder Ridge is set in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada in the near future. This region, widely known as the epicenter of the California gold rush, is also the ancestral homeland of indigenous peoples such as the Nisenan, Konkow, Miwok, and Maidu tribes.
Explore the remains of the gold rush and its impact on the landscape, and work with some of the cultural land-management practices of the indigenous people of the area, from crafting and cooking with native plants and materials to lighting cultural burns.
Cinder Ridge is based on the real ecology and history of the Sierra Nevada Foothills in California.
